So, bottom line, is there any way to be completely sure that it's due to the I/O board, and/or any good way to fix it? Any help will be very appreciated and will hopefully help others in the future too.

Logic tells me that it's the I/O board which is fooling around, but given my current financial situation, I don't want it to be. In my 'Camp Wired' computer classes that I teach weekly, I get this question often from students. I'll try an SMC bypass and see if that does anything at all and update on this. I did an SMC and PRAM reset, though it's unclear if it did anything at all. The battery indicator shows a 100% charge, as does Coconut Battery, which should mean that it's not the SMC. After a while of being mildly annoyed by it shutting down, I began testing the battery in TechTool, which gave me virtually no information save for the fact that the battery is just maintaining its charge, but not actually getting any. The next step is to put the drive into a working computer. Therefore, I would assume that the external hard drive adapter is faulty. I just pinned it down to magnets or magic. External hard drive cases generally shut the drive down when it detects that it is not plugged into a computer. I've had this problem before, which went away after a short while by itself. It's a shame, because I went for a Seasonic X-series to make sure I avoided just this sort of thing happening - but there you go.īut yeah, even bulletproof brands like Seasonic go sideways sometimes.Around two days ago I was about to move my workhorse to the kitchen, to do some culinary research (read: how to boil potatoes) when my MacBook just turned off when I disconnected the charger. It'll light up the board, but won't provide enough power to even get just the board and CPU to bios - it just clicks off as soon as I hit the power button. I shorted the PSU before I hooked everything up, as I always do, but since it fried my system it too is pretty much dead. If I disconnect the USB from the Mac then it completes its power down. So my Sabertooth will enter Bios, but gives me all kinds of weird notices relating to things that are not actually happening, but it won't enter bios with any actual devices plugged into it. Plugged it into my MacBook Pro (2009), reformatted for Mac use and everything was fine 4 days later i plugged it back in with the intention of using it as extra storage. With my hard drives down I can't currently test my GPUs, but if they've gone too then this could get very expensive. I've set up a test rig and gone through one part at a time and it turns out my main mobo, both my HDDs and for some reason a Sata power cable are all fried.
